When a man named Nick Abbott saw a Facebook post about a deaf Labrador retriever puppy in need of an adopter, he knew he had to meet Emerson. Nick, like the puppy, was born deaf and he’d never met a deaf dog before. He, though, had a feeling they would hit it off immediately, and was he really right.
When Nick finally went to meet the dog, Emerson went directly to Nick at the door, sat down at his feet, and just stayed there. It seemed to tell Nick and everyone else that he had already chosen Nick as his owner. Nick also knew right at that moment that they would get along well and understand each other well. This is definitely something that not all dog owners have experienced when they met their dog for the first time.
North Florida Rescue (NFR) Maine, a dog rescue group, was the one that saved Emerson and his littermates Nash and Palmer from a high-kill shelter in Florida. His brothers promptly got their furever homes, but Emerson was not as fortunate. In addition to being deaf, Emerson contracted Parvo and was extremely unwell for some time. The staff believes that Emerson miraculously survived so he might meet his soul partner Nick.
Nick and Emerson became inseparable almost immediately. Richelle, Nick’s mother, stated that Emerson would always try to find a way to touch Nick and just be with Nick.
Emerson is a quick student and has been studying sign language obedience commands. The duo has mastered the commands sit, stay, down, and paw so far but it appears like the sky is the limit! Never underestimate the ability of a motivated individual and a loyal dog to defy all expectations.
This duo may really be a match made in heaven and we are so happy for them!
