Silas, a pit bull terrier mix, was born deaf, but that doesn’t bother him at all!
His father, Sean, rescued Silas and his sibling Gus from Zeus’ Rescues in New Orleans. Zeus’ Rescues is a group that works on helping dogs get better lives from the streets.
Sean used rewards and affection to teach Silas hand gestures which he used to give commands since Silas was deaf. While a lot of us may actually think that it was quite a difficult task, Sean said that it was really simple.
Recently, Sean gave answers to some of the most often asked questions he gets about training and living with a deaf dog. The question that was asked the most is whether or not Silas has a normal bark. Sean asserted that Silas’s bark is entirely normal – just like any other dog’s bark would be.
Silas always sleeps with one paw on his best pal Gus so he can easily sense if something is amiss. Gus is a mix of pit bull and boxer and he and Silas are often always together doing things.
Another thing that many people ask Sean is how does he call Silas if he is not in the same room as he is? That definitely is a very interesting question.
If Silas is not in the room, Sean would call him by stomping on the floor or turning light switches on and off. By doing such, Silas’ curiosity is piqued and he would soon be running to see what is happening. Now that is really a very clever trick. Good one, Sean.
Sean is quite happy to have Silas and Gus in his live. He even shared that the two dogs are probably the best and nicest thing that has ever happened to him and definitely one of the best decisions he has ever made. He is also urging people to stop shopping for dogs and adopt instead.
