Some of us think that retirement is a way for people to stop working and just enjoy life. However, retirement isn’t for everyone. Some people continue to work or take up hobbies after retiring just to have something to do. Life can get boring pretty fast after retirement and there are times that you will miss going back to work and doing what you do best.
A German Shepherd named Dorka is a trained bomb-detection dog for the military. She was paired with a soldier named Monte, and both of them were depleted in Afghanistan. Throughout their deployment, Dorka and Monte bonded and became best friends.
After years of service, Dorka was finally retired from the US military. She was adopted by Monte who brought her to his home in Florida. However, retirement wasn’t easy for Dorka. She found it really hard to adjust to her new life and she became depressed.
Dorka missed her job and spent the entire day moping or lying on the couch. Monte tried everything to cheer her up but nothing made her happier than sniffing cars looking for explosives. Monte wanted the lively and playful Dorka back.
At one point, Monte had an idea to cheer Dorka up. He bought a substance that had a similar smell to what Dorka was trained to detect. Monte placed the substance on small containers with magnets and hid it in random places for Dorka to find.
Dorka’s mood completely changed when she started searching for things again. She got excited and lively again. Monte’s experiment worked and he would always bring the containers with him everywhere he went so he could make Dorka find them.
The ingenious solution got Dorka out of depression. She never wanted to stop working as a bomb-detection dog and Monte made sure that she could still do her job even after she retired. Thanks to Monte’s compassion and empathy, Dorka gets to be happy again. Here’s a video showing Monte’s idea of helping Dorka become excited and happy again.
