Albergue Vidas De 4 Patas, a nonprofit animal rescue group in Lima, Peru, got an urgent call about a dog that was seen in the mountainside. People who lived nearby said it had been three months since he first showed up and he never left the area. The real problem was, there was no food or water source so he starved and quickly lost weight.
Food wasn’t the only issue, but it was the primary cause of most, if not all of his problems. Because he didn’t have nutrition, his body deteriorated fast. He became a walking skeleton. And because he no longer had the strength to search for food, he ended up hurting himself every time he fell to the ground.
The dog, now Charlie, suffered, even more, when he acquired a painful skin disease. His wounds got infected and soon, flies and maggots started to swarm him. He was at the brink of death. Thankfully, rescuers found him just in time.
Charlie was frail but he was terrified, too, so he tried to hide from the rescuers thinking they were there to harm him. But with some encouragement and assurance that he was safe, he walked out of his hiding spot and willingly walked with them. He realized they were there to change his life for the better.
Blood transfusion was the very first thing Charlie needed after his examination. Once he was stable, he started receiving treatment for his skin disease. He wasn’t a fan of daily medicated baths, but he knew he needed them so he complied.
A few days went by quickly and the dog finally had enough strength to stand up without help. He began exploring his surroundings, ate on his own, and even used the bathroom all by himself. The little progress he made every day soon became a huge accomplishment.
With proper nutrition, daily baths, and lots of love, Charlie began to transform. He grew a beautiful shiny coat, achieved his ideal weight, and became a happy pup. He was indistinguishable and people can’t believe he was the same sick dog rescued a few months back.
People were once appalled with him, but today, Charlie is stealing the hearts of many. For sure, he will end up in a great home and everyone wishes for him to find his perfect match soon.
