Some people only want dogs if they are useful to them. Thus, if a dog becomes disabled, those people wouldn’t have a second thought about giving the dog away. That is what happened to a dog named Avellana, a former hunting dog that was surrendered to a shelter after becoming paralyzed.
Fortunately, Avellana was sent to an animal shelter with rescuers capable of giving special care. Galgos del Sol Rescue Center in Spain has state-of-the-art equipment to help paralyzed dogs regain mobility. If there was any place she needed to be in, it was there.
The dog had several activities to do every week as part of her physical therapy. Her rescuers would often assist her while swimming in a pool for exercise. Her rescuers would also often take her to a place with other dogs to motivate her to keep trying.
Little by little, Avellana regained feeling in her legs. She managed to stand up and move a little, albeit while being supported. She was already beating the odds by doing that.
One day, Avellana stood up and walked on her own. It was the day her rescuers had waited for. The men and women of Galgos del Sol Rescue Center celebrated that day when all of their efforts for the dog paid off.
After regaining her ability to walk, Avellana also had a change in behavior. She became more confident and livelier, sometimes to the point of being an attention seeker. Of course, the rescuers understood why she became like that and welcomed the change.
Avellana was adopted by a woman named Anne, who had many other dogs. There was no shortage of friends to keep her company in her new home. The dog’s new home was also near a beach, allowing her to enjoy a great view every day.
