A dog’s loyalty is unquestionable. They are the most selfless creatures on the planet and would do anything to protect their pack. This includes their humans, especially the smaller ones.
A Florida woman named Melissa Butt knows this all too well.
If it weren’t for her two dogs, Paco and Slayer, her two grandkids would have been bitten by a venomous snake and perished.
Alert dogs
Melissa was in her home watching her grandchildren play in her backyard. Their mom left the two boys, ages one and four, under her care while she ran errands. Her two dogs were there as well.
The Florida native noticed her pets staring at something in the grass. They were totally fixated and wouldn’t even respond when she called out to them. That was strange as they usually listen to her.
Then suddenly, one of the dogs, Paco, yelped, and the other, Slayer, tried to bite something crawling on the land. He, too, cried in pain. As it turned out, a snake, possibly a copperhead, bit them both. Paco got bitten in the leg while Slayer had puncture wounds on his face.
The snake slithered away after the attack.
Swollen
Melissa immediately brought her grandkids inside and returned to ensure the snake was gone. She then loaded the toddlers and dogs in her car and rushed them to an emergency vet.
Paco only had minor injuries and was quickly treated. Slayer, on the other hand, needed more medical attention. His face got swollen, and the vets feared the venom would kill him. They had to observe him for several days keenly.
Fortunately, the antivenin worked wondrously, and the dog pulled through. Melissa, and her family, were thrilled that both dogs survived. They regard them as heroes for preventing the snake from getting to the kids.
